Past Initiatives and Projects
Stream Crossing
– Extending Life of Mine (LOM): To accommodate underground operations, the extension of our mining project required meticulous planning for a river crossing, crucial for Opencast Two (OC2) and the underground operations.
– Tender Process and Engineering Expertise: A competitive tender process was initiated, and a respected Civil Engineering Company was engaged to oversee this project.
– Key Objectives: The project involved diverting the existing stream temporarily, stabilizing the riverbed, constructing culverts, and restoring the stream to its natural condition.
– Regulatory Compliance: Our project was assessed and deemed adequate to meet the requirements of Water Use License No. 05/x11F/ACFGJ/5165, particularly condition 2.1.1 of Appendix III.
– Approval: The stream crossing project received approval on September 28, 2022.
Designing a New Intersection
– Enhancing Site Access: We recognized the need for secure and efficient site access arrangements.
– Existing Access: The current single security-controlled access was established from a gravel road intersecting Road R542 (P107/2) at the north-western corner of the mine.
– Improved Access Plan: We proposed designing and constructing a new access intersection, situated approximately 1.5 km southeast of the existing gravel road access.
– Strategic Considerations: This new access point is designed to support future mine expansion and traffic engineering requirements.
– Production Expansion: Anticipating increased production to 120,000 tonnes per month, we have accounted for this in our intersection capacity analysis and access arrangements.
– Project Completion: The construction of this new access is planned for completion by December 2024.
Ongoing Initiatives and Projects
Water Management Facilities
– Clean and Dirty Water Separation: Water management, including clean and dirty water separation, is an essential aspect of our mining operations, both open pit and underground.
– Water Pollution Management: We prioritize preventing contamination of natural water systems and have implemented robust clean water management measures.
– Stormwater Diversion Berms: Upstream at open pit areas, we have constructed stormwater diversion berms to redirect clean water away from mining areas.
– Continued Measures: Further clean water diversion initiatives are underway, including pipeline installation and additional diversion berms, as open-cast operations progress.
Water Balance
– Comprehensive Water Management: Recognizing the significance of water management, we have taken steps to compile a comprehensive water balance, considering water usage, storage, and handling.
– Adapting to Expansion: This water balance also accounts for the water associated with new underground operations and covers the management of water resources in open pit areas and previously mined-out zones.
Monitoring Actions
– Annual Environmental Monitoring: We conduct a comprehensive review of our environmental actions, as outlined in our approved Environmental Management Plan (EMP), on an annual basis.
– Working Document: Our EMP serves as a living document, updated regularly and as necessary to reflect our commitment to sustainability.
– Specific Monitoring Actions (2022):
– Surface water monitoring
– Air quality monitoring
